October Irrigation Checkup for Arlington Yards

Use the change of season to review watering settings and identify sprinkler problems before they become part of your daily routine.

An October irrigation checkup starts with reviewing what your yard needs now. Check the controller, account for rainfall, and note runoff or uneven coverage before simply adding more watering time.

Revisit the summer schedule

Texas A&M AgriLife explains that established warm-season lawns generally need less supplemental water as cooler conditions and dormancy arrive. That does not make October a universal shutoff date: grass type, recent rainfall, soil, and new sod can change the decision.

Record the current watering days, start times, and zone durations before making adjustments. Follow your water provider's current restrictions, and review newly planted areas separately from established turf.

Look for coverage problems

During an appropriate watering period, observe where each zone sends water. Write down heads spraying the sidewalk, areas receiving little coverage, and spots that remain unusually wet. Take photos or a short video so the problem is easier to explain when requesting service.

AgriLife recommends irrigation audits to evaluate application rates and coverage. A catch-can test measures how much water reaches different parts of the lawn; guessing from controller minutes alone does not tell you that amount.

Address runoff before adding minutes

If water leaves the yard before a cycle finishes, a longer run can waste more water. AgriLife's cycle-and-soak guidance explains how dividing watering into shorter cycles with time between them can help water soak in. Suitable runtimes depend on the soil, slope, and sprinkler type, so there is no single setting for every Arlington yard.

Review the controller and sensors

Arlington Water identifies smart controllers and rain and freeze sensors as tools that can help reduce water use. Check the manufacturer's instructions for your equipment and note any alerts, bypass settings, or sensors that need attention. A calendar reminder is useful for revisiting settings as conditions change.

Prepare a focused repair request

Share the controller model, affected zone numbers, what you observed, and whether the issue appears every cycle. If you recently added sod or plants, mention that too. Those details help distinguish a scheduling question from an equipment problem.
